Seeing Beyond the Shoreline

Coastal storytelling through place, people, light and detail.

For 18 years, I’ve built my work around seeing the details that make a place distinctive.

For 15 of those years, I’ve been creating an extensive image library for the City of Carlsbad, California — documenting not just how the city looks, but how it changes, how it feels, and what makes people care about it.

My photography is deliberate, commissioned, strategic and intentional from the start.

Every assignment begins with what the client needs to communicate. From there, I bring an artist’s eye to the people, places, light, color and details that bring that story to life.

Because the photographs that stay with us do more than show us a place.

They make us feel something about being there.

Purpose + Point of View

Every image has a reason for being made. Sometimes the story is the coastline and extraordinary light. Sometimes it is architecture, a neighborhood, a local business, someone at work, a community gathering or one small detail that gives the entire place character.

I consider the audience, the purpose and how the photograph will ultimately be used — then create imagery that answers the assignment while still having energy, emotion and a distinct point of view.

The artistry is not separate from the assignment. It is how the assignment is brought to life.

The Coast

Light, movement, atmosphere and the changing character of the shoreline.

The City

Architecture, streets, businesses and public spaces — the visual elements that make a city unmistakably its own.

The People

The people who give a place its energy, personality and sense of community.

The Details

Color, texture, design, light and the smaller moments that can change the way someone sees a place.

The Experience

The places people gather, work, explore, celebrate and spend their time — the moments that turn a destination into somewhere people want to experience for themselves.

A Coastal Story, Curated

For 15 years, my work for the City of Carlsbad has grown alongside the city itself.

The image library serves real communication needs across community engagement, economic development and city storytelling, while documenting a coastal community through years of change.

That longevity matters to me.

It means knowing a place well enough to recognize what is changing, what is enduring and what deserves another look.

It means creating photographs that are useful today while building, image by image, a visual record of what makes a place matter.

That is the perspective I would bring to St. Pete-Clearwater.

I’m based in Tampa Bay. St. Pete-Clearwater is not simply somewhere I would arrive for an assignment and leave behind. It is part of the region I call home — and a place I would be excited to explore more deeply through its art, architecture, neighborhoods, makers, people, color, culture and, of course, that extraordinary Gulf light.

The sunset may be what stops you. The story is what makes you care.
